don pedro albizu campos (1891 - 1965) was a leader of the puerto rican independence movement. born in ponce, he saw europe while serving as an officer in the u.s. army’s colored corps, attended harvard on a scholarship and then built a career as an orator against imperialism.
he was arrested several times for leading the puerto rican nationalist party. while in federal custody, radiation tests were conducted on him that caused his face to deform. he continued delivering lectures after his release, until his death. in puerto rico, he is known as "el maestro" or "the teacher."
